The Process of a Design Project

Each design project has its own process. And each process includes many steps before sharing the final result. From a digital illustration to hand lettering project, each has its unique journey of hours and layers of work. Getting a clear idea on what’s working on, and organizing your process will help you focus more on the project itself. This in result prevents you from wasting time when designing.

Framework

Framework or thumbnails are important as a first step. This helps you draw ideas before implementing them actually. It also gives you flexibility to change details before moving to the sketching part. And if you’re working on a series or storyline, you can visualize the bigger picture and have a clear direction as to which thumbnail goes first.

Sketching

This step comes after the framework or thumbnails drawing. In this step, you’ll do the initial sketch based on the ideas you generated. The difference is that you work on a bigger scale this time. And this allows you to spot any mistake and overcome it before inking or digitizing your work.

Sketching materials vary. There are lead pencils and charcoals. You can work with whatever you’re mostly comfortable with. Following sketching, some designers ink their drawing.

Digitizing (if Applicable)

If the final result is a digital work, then you’ll want to digitize your work after finalizing your sketch. Again, any mistake on the sketching part will show up when digitizing. If you have experience in working with vectors, you can overcome tiny mistakes that show up. Yet, this step will help you gain knowledge on how to refine your sketch as much as possible for your vector work to be clean and professional.

Final Result

After digitizing your work, this is the last step. Here, you can add other details, recolor your design, and add texture if you want. This is all up to you. If it’s a personal project you’re working on, then you have full flexibility on what you want to do with your design. But if it’s a client work, you must go over the design brief and see if anything’s missing.
