Designing Patterns Digital and NonDigital
Written by: Anwaar S. AlAsousi
Starting with patterns at first seem difficult. However, when gradually designing patterns using simple motifs will eventually improve the designer’s skills.
It begins with knowing a little about patterns. But before that, it’s easy to start with the known shapes including circles and squares. Experiment as much as you can either using a pencil or using a software like Photoshop. It’s tempting to look at tutorials and get inspired by other designers. However, the more you work yourself from the beginning, the more you’ll build a solid style later on.
If you know how to use grids, design simple patterns using grid lines. Yet, if you find them complicated to work with, design your pattern your way then learn more about grids later.
Start with a simple pencil sketch. Draw whatever comes to your mind. Have a basic idea and start from there. Too many patterns are better with simple and clear shapes. Once you have your design, you can later add textures and effects if you wish to. Those usually come as late steps.
After designing as many patterns, you will later be able to tell what needs to be fixed before completing your full design.
For the nondigital pattern approach, I refer to patterns like the Islamic Patterns and the likes. However, constructing those patterns need more precision and patience. I will write another article on this topic later.
