Symmetrical Pattern Design and Freestyle

Symmetrical Pattern Design and Freestyle

Not all pattern designs have to be symmetrical. There are many ways to design a pattern and textures whether for background painting (for concept and animation art), or as a surface pattern.

The usage of the pattern determines how you want to approach designing the new pattern design. For instance, if you’re designing for a wallpaper, then the design and its size will be different than designing for a stationery notebook. Even a slight change of the size will reflect in the pattern design.

If you have experienced designing patterns before you will better understand that visually. Yet, I have an example below to demonstrate my point here, and show you the difference between symmetrical and freestyle pattern designing using the same elements.

Certainly, choosing a theme or idea for a new pattern design sometimes take time. But instead of choosing complicated elements or theme, use simple ones. And think of a simple idea to get you started. Otherwise, if you complicate the steps you will procrastinate and perhaps won’t design for some time.

Symmetrical Pattern Design:

You can clearly see the symmetry in the pattern design above. For this type of design, it’s better to use guidelines and rulers to make sure the circles are in their correct positions. Otherwise, there will be difference and it’ll show in the full pattern design later when repeated. Also, you can clearly notice the layout of the design and the structure of the composition. Below is the full pattern design:

Freestyle Pattern Design

Instead of choosing a different theme or elements, I decided to use the same elements as the previous pattern design. It’ll make it easy for you to spot the differences in both designs. The color palette is almost the same and the main element is a circle.

Although I used the same elements, but placed them in different and random positions. Also, if you look closely you’ll notice that I picked some of the colors to design the previous symmetrical pattern design. The idea here is to simply design using simple elements, tools, and colors rather than choose something completely different.

Below is the full pattern design.

Remember to approach designing simply. If you go for perfectionism you’ll complicate the whole process and eventually procrastinate. Rather, start simply and gradually make your way through complicated ones later when you have more experience. But at the beginning, design simply using whatever tools and basic ideas you have.
