Isometric Drawing in Graphic Design

Written by: Anwaar Saleh

Isometry is one of the main drawing forms. Depending on the project to be drawn, in Isometric drawing, it takes a lot of time to get one drawing done. Small objects can be finished in less time but not in big projects. And in order to understand the isometric used in graphics. It’s better if you read about the origins of isometric art and understand the concept before applying it on digital arts.

Isometric drawings are originating from Isometric Projection. When designing an isometric drawing, 3 lines intercept. Horizontal, vertical line, and central line to create a guide before starting to form any shape. Thus, projects created from isometric projection are 3 dimensional.

There are similarities between Isometric and Mechanical drawings but our focus on this article will be on the isometric art and drawing. Isometric drawings clearly showcase products in different angles.

Too many shapes can be drawn using the isometric way of drawing. Squares, hexagons, circles, cylindrical … etc. However, the artist has to draw using the isometric grid and lines (vertical, horizontal, and central). We added a short video below on how to draw an isometric cube.

The same drawing principles are used when creating isometric graphics (for video games or digital illustrations). However, in graphics isometric art is created using digital software like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. In terms of painting, it’s up to each designer to use his own colors palette. This is where creativity is showcased.
